1984 Setting Analysis

Settings

1. Posters are displayed everywhere throughout Winston's apartment, which resembles
the face of a man's eyes gazing at you. A caption is listed beneath the picture which states Big
Brother Is Watching You. This particular picture would give the reader an uneasy feeling
about the atmosphere.

2. Once Winston enters the Victory Maison Apartment he immediately smells the stench of
boiled cabbage and old rag mats. This particular stench probably sets Winston's mood as
being disgusted. The reader would probably be unable to bear this smell.

3. A telescreen talks about the latest updates on news stories in Winston's apartment. The
telescreen is able to pick up the faintest sound that can be made. Knowing that the telescreen
is able to hear and pick up the faintest noises would likely sets the reader's mood to be
somewhat paranoid.

Question

1. How does this setting affect Winston psychologically?

The setting described in chapter one affects Winston psychologically by being somewhat
paranoid. Winston is afraid to live in his apartment building. He becomes paranoid at several
times, and thinks that someone is out to get him.
